Savage River Pipeline

From Engineering Heritage Australia

The Savage River Mine pipeline is a 300mm diameter steel pipeline which conveys iron ore slurry 85 km from the mine to a pelletising plant at Port Latta on Tasmania’s North West Coast. It was built by Bechtel Corporation in 1967. Most of the line is buried, double- wrapped for corrosion protection. Permanent corrosion protection is provided by an impressed current at each end. No corrosion protection is required on the inside. There are two river crossings where the pipeline is suspended, one 366m long and the other 64m long. The line operates at high pressure developed by a positive displacement pump at the mine end. After 56-year’s-service, the line is still in operation.
