GREEN, Clifford Robert FIEAust CPEng NER APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus) (1952 – )
Clifford Robert Green was born to Robert (Bob) Lionel Green (father) and Adria Josephine (Jo) Green (nee Wells) (mother) in September 1952 in Perth and spent his early years at Gosnells before moving to Yokine in 1960. He was educated at John Forrest Senior High School, matriculating in 1969.
Cliff graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1973, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship and Hackett Bursary. He was an active member of the engineering student community, serving as Editor of the Non Loqui magazine and organizing the mechanical engineering displays for the University Exhibition in 1972. His efforts earned him the title Engineer of the Year by the University Engineers Club in 1972. He also represented the university in martial arts, earning a Half Blue in 1973.
In 1974, he was the only WA applicant to enter the prestigious Ford Management Training Program at Ford Motor Company in Victoria.
In 1981, he established his consulting practice Cliff Green Design, which was incorporated as Geng Pty Ltd in 1990. The firm has provided engineering and product design consultancy for clients in Australia and internationally.
Among his notable early works was the detail design of a mobile shearing complex, which won first prize at the Perth Royal Show in the mid-1980s.
For over three decades, Cliff has designed live fire training systems and facilities used across many Australian Defence training ranges. His innovations include specialised training targets and a unique non-lead 5.56mm training bullet, successfully exported to the USA. These bullets enable NATO-standard M-series weapons to be safely used in indoor training facilities.
From the mid-1980s, he contributed extensively to engineering education, lecturing on Engineering Design at the UWA and Curtin university.
Cliff was a long-serving member of the Industrial Design Council of Australia (WA), which later became the Design Institute of Australia. He served as a judge for the Australian Design Awards from 1999 to 2001.
Cliff has served on the Engineers Australia National Committee for Engineering Design since 1996, including 15 years as Deputy Chair. He played a key role in supporting the Warman Design and Build Competition and authored Design Guidelines for Our Planet and Us, a sustainability guide developed on behalf of the NCED.
He was recognized by Engineers Australia as one of Australia’s Most Innovative Engineers in 2016.
Cliff has served on the WA Mechanical & Mechatronics Committee of Engineers Australia, being Chair for 2023 – 2025 inclusive.
Cliff has been a keen yachtsman since his youth. In 1988 he won the WA State Championship in the International Fireball Class sailing dinghy.
As an active sportsman, he played hockey for 50 years at various clubs and participated in Orienteering from 1974 to 2015.
He has an interest in all things mechanical and enjoys tinkering with various cars that he owns. Nowadays, he walks with his dog Charlotte, plays the occasional game of golf, and still runs an active consultancy in Engineering Design, often helping people who are striving to develop a new product.
Cliff married Pauline (nee Eastcott) in 2004 and they have one son, William.
