Walter Brockway
BROCKWAY, Walter St Clair, MWAIE (1864-1941)
Born at Culmstock, Devon, Somerset in England, Brockway served articles with a Civil Engineer and established a practice at Bendigo in Victoria. In 1883 he married Harriet Emily Carey in Victoria.
After moving to Perth, he constructed the city tramway system with C A Paterson (q.v.).
In 1899 he commenced a 36 year relationship with the Municipality of Claremont by being appointed Town Clerk and Engineer a position he held until he resigned in April 1909. He also became the Engineer to Cottesloe Council and established a practice in Perth in 1909.
After being elected as Councillor in 1909 he was Mayor of Claremont in 1911-12 and then rejoined Claremont as the Municipal Engineer.
He was a foundation member of the WA Institution of Engineers in 1910, inaugural auditor and a member of its council in 1912-14.
Brockway gave evidence to the Royal Commission on Tramway Extension in 1922 and was the Town Clerk and Engineer for Claremont Municipal Council from 1929 until his resignation in 1936.
His son, with the same name, was a Surveyor, who served in World War I.
He died on February 15, 1941 at Claremont.
