George Farrar
FARRAR, George Edward FSocE, MWAlE (1848-1919)
Born at Huddersfield in Yorkshire, Farrar studied at King‘s College and then worked with an engineer and ironmaster. After joining J M Toler CE of Westminster as an associate, he worked on the construction of docks at Milford and of railways for two years, and then joined Easton, Amos & Anderson for whom be constructed several significant works.
Moving to Melbourne in 1871, he joined the Mines Department and Land Survey Office for six months, and then moved to South Australia to join the Engineer in Chief‘s Department in 1874. Moving to private practice in 1879, he became the Engineer Surveyor to the Midlands Road Board in 1884. Leaving this Board when it was abolished in 1889, he spent six months in Victoria, and then returned to South Australia to be the Assistant Inspector of Roads under C T Hargrave until 1893.
After joining the Public Works Department of Western Australia as an Engineering Surveyor mainly on road and bridge work in 1894, he was the Resident Engineer for Roads and Bridges in 1896, a District Engineer under C S R Palmer in 1900, and he became Engineer‐in‐Charge of Roads and Bridges in 1903. He was also Acting Engineer for Harbours and Rivers in 1907 under J. Thompson. Farrar retired in 1912 from public service, and established a practice as a Consulting Engineer.
