CAREER
Mark is an Engineers Australia (EA) Fellow and Engineering Executive, and is Chartered in Electrical Engineering, ITEE, and Leadership & Management. He is also a Registered Professional Engineer in Queensland, and a Graduate of The Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).
He graduated in 1983 from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) with an honours degree in Electrical Engineering, a location where he has mentored undergraduate engineers since the turn of the 21st century. His career journey has included roles in the electricity and gas industries where he worked in businesses including the State Electricity Commission of Queensland, Ergon Energy, and Energex, where he held many roles encompassing power system planning, project management, network operations, energy retailing and customer services delivery.
He has been a member and Chair of various energy industry association committees including Energy Networks Australia and CIGRE. He has held senior office bearer roles for Engineers Australia, including 2017/18 Electrical College Board Chair, National Congress Delegate (twice) and 2019 Queensland President. He also holds the unique distinction of being the only Queensland President who at one time was an EA employee (as a Chartered Assessor).
Presidents Highlights 2019
In reflection on his Presidency, Mark noted the significance of 2019 being the organisation’s centenary year with many events centred around this milestone. The theme of the year was recognition and celebration of engineering around three key pillars of the past, present and future. The Division’s activities also centred on delivery of initiatives to advance the profession, with a particular focus on stakeholder engagement, the STEM pipeline, emerging engineers, and diversity.
Particular events and highlights that Mark recalls include:
• A record four Regional Forums in Toowoomba, Bundaberg, Mackay, and Rockhampton, plus an inaugural member event in Gympie
• An event with 20 Queensland Past Presidents farewelling EA’s Spring Hill office, before moving into the Adelaide St offices late in the year
• Heritage recognition of the Normanton-Croydon railway
• Unveiling by EA of a refurbished 1940 Vintage Southern Cross engine at Highfields Pioneer Village
• Engineering Heritage Queensland receiving the 2019 President’s recognition award, and long serving Toowoomba member Doug Harland receiving the President’s Medal
• Jothi Ramanujam being recognised as Queensland Professional Engineer of the Year, and Matthew Uidam as Young Professional Engineer
• A unique Centenary breakfast held at Government House, Fernberg with Queensland Governor the Honourable Paul de Jersey
• The sold-out Queensland Centenary Gala Dinner held at the W Hotel in August
• Launching of the EA mentoring scheme
• Networking events with Queensland’s Engineering Deans
• The President’s Boardroom lunch for special guest Kathy Hirschfeld Hon FIEAust with hydrogen industry representatives.
The year ended on a high for the whole organisation with World Engineers Convention in Melbourne attended by engineers from around the globe. Many Queensland members attended as delegates, session Chairs and speakers.
