Blackall Woolscour

The Blackall Woolscour opened in 1908. Sheep were originally washed to remove contaminants from the fleece, but hand-washing (scouring) of fleeces started from about 1840.

Mechanical scours started to appear from the late 1800s and by 1920 there were 12 steam-driven wool scours in Western Queensland.

It operated commercially until 1978. In 1989, with the strong support of the local Council, the Blackall Historical Woolscour Association was formed to manage the site and commence restoration of the machinery.

Today, during the mid-year tourist season, the Association operates the Woolscour, with much of its original machinery intact and restored.
