Canning Dam

Canning Dam is a benchmark site in the history of the provision of Perth’s water supply and in the history of concrete gravity dam construction in Western Australia (WA). It solved the problem of Perth’s water supply and it was the main source of water from 1940 to 1961 and remains essential to the city’s water supply service today. Its innovative structure and hydraulic design are considered to be at the forefront of concrete gravity dam design at the period. The visual qualities of the curved concrete dam wall and the use of International Stripped Classical detailing on the gate house piers and balustrade are also significant.
