Adelaide Parklands - Park 4 Reservoir

From Engineering Heritage Australia

In 1865 the Port Adelaide area was connected to the main Adelaide water supply. To increase the pressure of the water supply to Port Adelaide a 4.7 Megalitre reservoir was constructed in the northern parklands in 1878. The increase in water pressure allowed for improvement in the sewerage system in Port Adelaide.

The reservoir was originally connected to the Thorndon Park Reservoir on the north-eastern suburbs of Adelaide. The reservoir was designed and constructed by the then South Australian Government Hydraulic Engineers Office.

The reservoir is constructed of brick with an arched roof supported on 48 columns. The reservoir has a concrete floor and soil mounded over the top. The reservoir has drains to dispose of the water that pools in the arch.

The reservoir is still in use and currently supplies water to approximately 100,000 people throughout Adelaide.
