Widespread use of cesspits 1876 – William Clarke commissioned to advise on water supply and sewerage works. Recommended collection & treatment systems for Bathurst and Narrandera.  Country Towns Water Supply & Sewerage (CTWS&S) Act 1880.

First sewerage systems provided at Hay & Narrandera (1898

Trickling filtration treatment used by PWD e.g., Griffith, Bathurst, Lismore. Pond disinfection systems introduced. First Intermittent Decanted Extended Aeration (IDEA) Pasveer Channel at Adelong, 1965.

In 1974 Public Works developed the 4,000 EP (equivalent persons) Bathurst box, which incorporated the IDEA process in a 3m deep rectangular tank. The larger 8,000 EP Port Macquarie tank followed in 1978, and subsequently 16,000 EP tanks.

Pond and chlorine disinfection systems.

High intensity Ultraviolet irradiation disinfection

Major sewerage scheme commenced for Gosford/Wyong.

Vacuum and Pressure/Gravity Collection and transfer systems developed. Closure of CTWS&S Program, 2017.

2008 - Safe and Secure Water Program (?)

Commencement of Aboriginal Communities Water Supply & Sewerage Program, 2017.
